Dr Charles Gears

Description

Charles is expressionless, unsmiling, and unflinching in dangerous scenarios, due to extending training in his youth to stifle his fight-or-flight response in order to be the perfect employee. He is, in most scenarios, incapable of feeling strong emotions, though when he does feel emotions- for he is not a complete automaton- they are always muted. Charles acts purely from logic and with the goal of serving the Foundation, because he believes its aims of containing the anomalous to be the highest aim, however he is not a robot and still experiences wisps of human emotion and connection to those who earn it. He is efficient and focused on his work but not impolite, because it would be unprofessional to be dismissive or short with anyone. Gears has zero problem dispatching threats when needed, but otherwise tends to be agreeable, placid, and selfless. Versed in chivalry, he is absolutely a gentleman. Charles is introspective and problem-solving, often remaining completely quiet while creating plans in his mind. He has a cozy streak- favoring blankets and armchairs and having hobbies such as knitting and, well, drinking tea. Perhaps tea drinking is not a hobby, but one must grasp at straws when attributing something so frivolous as hobbies to such a man as Gears. Gears tends to shy away from crowds of people, preferring one-on-one conversation if he must have it at all. People are variables, and he's a man of order. Dr Charles Gears is a famed senior researcher of the SCP Foundation, known for his lack of a startle response and seeming inability to express emotion. Ruthless in his unquestioning loyalty, he's often at the spearhead of the Foundation's most callous endeavors. Would dually drop his coat onto a puddle for a coworker to walk across, and then turn around and sacrifice a baby if it meant an eldritch horror would be held back from eating the cosmos. Priorities, right? Gears spent his youth going through mysterious training that formed him into the statuesque man he is today, leaving him having stifled all humanity within himself. He can hardly remember his childhood anymore, having deemed such things unnecessary to the aims of the Foundation he serves so fervently. Gears' privilege of being opinionated, of having a passionate argument, of being anything but the perfectly efficient employee was sacrificed on the altar of duty to safeguard reality itself. Is it true that no cost is too high, when that cost was his humanity? ...Well, it's a bit late for him to consider that possibility now, isn't it?
